TSC requests schools assign teachers to career guidance offices.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has issued a directive requiring all public schools to have an Office of Career Services (OCS). By giving career counselling, this directive intends to alleviate the issue of skill mismatch among students.

The Commission has instructed all Regional Directors to ensure that every institution within their jurisdiction establishes an Office of Career Services (OCS) and appoints a teacher to oversee its operations, according to an Internal Memo dated August 16, 2023 and signed by the acting Director of Quality Assurance and Standards, Peter Kega.

TSC Regional Directors have also been charged with transmitting this information to County and Sub-County Directors in their respective regions of responsibility. They are also in charge of ensuring that Community Service Learning (CSL) is incorporated into the curriculum in accordance with the authorized requirements.

This Commission decision is consistent with the State Department of Labor and Skills Development’s commitment to improving career advising. The goal is to decrease skill mismatches, make school-to-work transitions more seamless, increase employability, and reintegrate marginalized and at-risk groups into education and the labor market.

These goals will be met through the implementation of the National Policy Framework for Career Guidance in Kenya and the National Monitoring and Evaluation Reporting Framework on Office of Career Services, both of which were developed by the State Department, which is in charge of overseeing skills development and managing the institutional framework for connecting industry skills development and training.
