Retiring Teachers Granted 3-Year Contract on Agreement
In an effort to solve teacher shortages in arid and semi-arid regions, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has increased the retirement age for teachers by three years. This change took effect on January 1, 2018. Specifically, this modification to the policy is intended to apply to educators who are employed in environments that are hot and dry, such as those found in the districts of Garissa, Mandera, and Wajir.
It has been decided to let teachers in the aforementioned school districts keep working for an additional three years after they reach the age at which they are legally required to retire. The TSC has extended an invitation to return to the classroom and assist in reducing the severity of the teacher shortage by sending contract letters to retired educators living in certain areas.
Many educators who were previously required to retire automatically after they reached the age of retirement have expressed their gratitude for this move. Because of the frequently difficult working conditions that can be found in these areas, there is now a shortage of qualified teachers who are prepared to work there.
Students who rely on their expertise will benefit greatly from the increased availability of experienced educators who will be able to serve in these areas as a result of this change in policy, which aims to enhance the number of experienced educators who are available to serve in these areas.
As part of this endeavor, TSC Chief Executive Officer Dr. Nancy Macharia has made it a priority to recruit retired educators from the Northeast region. A crisis has been caused by a lack of non-local instructors in these locations, which has led to a shortage of teachers overall but is especially severe for teachers who frequently go to these places.
It is anticipated that this new plan would improve the quality of education that is offered to pupils in these arid and semi-arid regions. This will be accomplished by ensuring that every child has access to teachers who are both qualified and experienced in their fields. It has been decided to give teachers in these locations the opportunity to extend their careers by an additional three years before they are required to retire.
