HELB Loans, as Promised by Education CS Machogu, Will Be Disbursed Next Week.
On Tuesday, November 7, the Ministry of Education will distribute Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) loans to college and vocational and technical school (TVET) students.
Strikes by college students have been going on for days over the delayed distribution of these money, thus this news comes at a very inopportune time.
The new Higher Education Funding Model loans for first-year college and TVET students have been processed, according to a statement released by Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu on Friday.
According to Machogu, “The Higher Education Loans Board has finalized the processing of loans for First Year students in universities and TVETs under the New Higher Education Funding Model.”
He also told the students who had been successful in applying that the money would be sent to their schools and accounts on Tuesday, November 7, 2023.
Machogu asked students who had applied for loans through the Higher Education Financing Portal to double-check the authenticity of their bank details submitted in the loan application.
This announcement comes after a string of protests by students at different schools over the slow distribution of financial aid. In particular, roadblocks and the use of tear gas resulted from confrontations between students and police at Machakos University.
In early October, students from Multimedia University stopped Magadi Road, the main entrance to Ongata Rongai Town in Kajiado County, in an incident not dissimilar to the one described above.
