Before admission to university, students to complete NYS training.

If President William Ruto’s government accepts the recommendations of the Presidential Working Party on Educational Reforms, there may be a revival of forced community service training similar to the National Youth Service (NYS) program of the 1980s.

This proposal was made by the team, chaired by Prof. Raphael Munavu, in a research released on Tuesday, August 1. All students graduating from secondary school would be required to undergo a three-month community service training program under this idea.

Furthermore, all Kenyan nationals would be required to go through the same nine-month training program in order to access the labor market after graduating from college.

As a result, it is critical to reestablish community service learning programs for post-secondary students. This effort strives to promote peaceful cohabitation, patriotism, cultural understanding, and a strong work ethic in our children.

Community service training will become an essential criterion for gaining entry to higher education and entering the labor field.

Part of the report recommended that “a certificate of compliance to the community service be issued as proof before admission into the world of work.”

This committee was formed to develop a strategy for Kenya’s educational system, which involves the difficult implementation of the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC).

The study emphasizes community service as a way to prepare students for future personal and professional responsibilities.

According to the study, “community service learning” encourages pupils to build a feeling of civic responsibility to help and improve their communities.

Even though the report does not indicate when community learning would begin if implemented, the Ministry of Education will be in charge of developing a policy.

According to the report, the Ministry of Education (“MoE”) should “develop and operationalize a policy for mandatory Community Service Learning Programs for all students upon completion of Senior High School, TVET, and University education.”

These programs, which are intended to foster cross-cultural interaction and national cohesiveness, would be administered in two parts: the first three months following senior high school in one’s own county, and the second three months following TVET/university studies in a different county.
