KCPE and KCSE Will Vary See What We’ve Learned This Year
Multiple adjustments will be made to the KCSE in 2023. Exams will be graded differently, and the method of collecting them from the containers will change. This year’s final KCSE examinations will be the first to use a new grading system announced by the Ministry of Education (MOE) and adopted by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).
Students’ final grades will now be based on only two courses under the new system. Both Math and one language (English, Kiswahili, or sign language) are required. KNEC will also take into account the top five subjects in which a student has achieved the best.
The implementation of this new system is anticipated to lead to a dramatic rise in enrollment at universities, TVET centers, and other educational facilities. Once upon a time, KNEC had a grading system that included on how well a student did in English, Math, Kiswahili, two other sciences, and two other disciplines.
The Presidential Working Committee on Education Reforms found that the existing grading system disadvantaged many students.
The committee also found that the previous system’s reliance on summative exams for certification and placement resulted in many students dropping out of school. We tested reading comprehension in English and Kiswahili, and math aptitude.
The KCSEs for this year’s Form 4 pupils will begin on October 23 and end on November 24. Changes to the guidelines for awarding examinations have been announced by David Njengere, chief executive officer of the Kenya National Examinations Council.
The morning exams will be collected first, graded, and then the afternoon exams will be collected and processed. It is no longer common practice for principals to hold onto tests until the appropriate moment and then distribute them to students.
The invigilation procedure will also be different for the KCSE exams in 2023. Previously, invigilators were primary school teachers; this year, they will be secondary school teachers. These substantial changes will have an impact on the KCSE examinations this year.
