The Ministry of Education has declared that beginning on Tuesday, November 7, it will begin issuing Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) loans to university and TVET students. This announcement comes as a direct response to earlier demonstrations that students have staged in response to the issue of delayed loan disbursement.
As part of the recently implemented Higher Education Funding Model, the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has completed the processing of loans for students who are entering their first year of college or TVET. This information was provided in a statement that was delivered on Friday by Ezekiel Machogu, who is the Cabinet Secretary for Education.
Machogu continued by saying that “The Ministry has informed successful applicants that funds will begin disbursement to their respective universities and student accounts starting on Tuesday, November 7, 2023.” It has been suggested that students who have applied for student loans through the Higher Education Financing Portal double examine the information that they have provided regarding their banking details. These students should follow this recommendation.
Students from a variety of institutions across the country have been organizing demonstrations in response to the protracted delay in the distribution of funding, and these actions are being taken as a direct response to those demonstrations. Students at Machakos University, for instance, blocked highways and fought with police and anti-riot authorities in order to get the attention of the Ministry of Education, which is part of the Kenyan government’s Department of Education.
At the beginning of the month of October, students from Multimedia University caused a traffic jam on Magadi Road in Kajiado County by blocking the road.
