KCSE candidate collapses after a government official slaps them during the exam.
Following multiple slaps from a Ministry of Education official, a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) student passed out on Tuesday morning.
Exams were in progress when the event occurred at Sironga Girls High School in Bogichora, Nyamira County.
According to a police statement that Kenyans.co.ke was able to get, at around nine in the morning, Beatrice Kendi, a quality assurance officer, performed a regular inspection of the designated exam room while the applicant was doing her exams there.
Further investigation was reportedly sparked when the officer noticed the student chewing something that appeared suspicious.
After failing to get any exhibit, the aforementioned officer confronted the student and, following interrogation, slapped the applicant multiple times.
The police statement stated, in part, that “she moved closer and slapped the student several times but did not recover any exhibit to effect.”
The teenager continued to exhibit restlessness in class, according to the police statement. However, the student passed out as the exam was coming to a finish at around ten in the morning.
She was taken right away to the school dispensary for first aid, where she received treatment and was allowed to leave. The center’s examination invigilator also attested to this. After that, the student was taken to the hospital.
Security and education officials visited the school after the incident to investigate the situation, which has now caused a public controversy.
“During the morning exam session, at approximately 9 am, an official from the Ministry of Education (Quality Assurance), Beatrice Kendi, made a quick check in room number nine. Upon entering, she observed a female student chewing something that she suspected to be unauthorized material,” the report stated.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have begun looking into the situation.
It occurs just two weeks after a school form four student leaped from the second story of a dorm building while other females were getting ready to shower. After falling and hitting her head, she was taken to Nyamira Level Five, where she was declared deceased.
